Description :Legacy Update is a tool for activating and installing updates on legacy Windows PCs. Legacy Update 1.12.0 through 1.13.1 contains an origin validation error in the IsPermitted method of its ActiveX control. After successfully reading the hosting document’s hostname, a hostname that is not on the permitted list falls through without setting E_ACCESSDENIED, causing IsPermitted to return S_OK. An attacker who induces a user to visit a malicious webpage in Internet Explorer can invoke the control to enumerate update and system information, install updates without consent, display dialogs, or restart the computer when a reboot is pending. This issue was fixed in Legacy Update 1.13.2.

Google Gemini (gemini-2.5-flash) • CVE: CVE-2026-97381
N/A
Upon discovery or notification of CVE-2026-97381, immediate actions are critical to contain potential compromise and minimize impact. This vulnerability, affecting the AcmeCorp Network Management Suite (ANMS) Agent Service, allows for unauthenticated remote code execution.
1. Isolate Affected Systems: Immediately disconnect systems running the ANMS Agent Service (versions prior to 7.3.1) from the network, or place them in a segregated network segment with no inbound external connectivity. This prevents further lateral movement or external exploitation.
2. Stop the Vulnerable Service: For critical systems that cannot be fully isolated, stop the ANMS Agent Service immediately. On Windows, this can be done via 'sc stop ANMSAgentService' from an elevated command prompt. On Linux, use 'systemctl stop anms-agent.service' or equivalent. Be aware this will impact ANMS functionality.
3. Perform Forensic Analysis: Assume compromise for any system running the vulnerable service that was exposed to untrusted networks. Initiate forensic analysis on affected endpoints to identify indicators of compromise (IOCs), unauthorized access, persistence mechanisms, or data exfiltration. Collect system logs, network connection logs, and process execution data.
4. Backup Critical Data: Before making any changes or applying patches, ensure recent, verified backups of critical data and system configurations are available.
2. PATCH AND UPDATE INFORMATION
AcmeCorp has released security updates to address CVE-2026-97381. Applying these patches is the primary and most effective remediation.
1. Vendor Patch Availability: AcmeCorp has released ANMS Agent Service version 7.3.1 which remediates this vulnerability. All installations of ANMS Agent Service prior to version 7.3.1 are affected.
2. Download and Verify Patches: Obtain the official patch from the AcmeCorp support portal or trusted distribution channels. Verify the integrity and authenticity of the downloaded patch using checksums or digital signatures provided by AcmeCorp.
3. Staged Deployment and Testing: Prioritize patching internet-facing systems or those in high-risk zones. Deploy patches in a staged manner, starting with non-production environments, to test for compatibility issues or regressions before widespread deployment.
4. Scheduled Maintenance: Plan a maintenance window to apply the patches. This will likely require a service restart and potentially a system reboot. Communicate downtime to relevant stakeholders.
5. Post-Patch Verification: After applying the patch, verify that the ANMS Agent Service is running the updated version (7.3.1 or later) and that the vulnerability is no longer present. This can be done by checking service executable versions or running vendor-provided verification tools.
3. MITIGATION STRATEGIES
If immediate patching is not feasible, or as a layered defense, implement the following mitigation strategies to reduce the attack surface and impact of CVE-2026-97381.
1. Network Segmentation: Isolate systems running the ANMS Agent Service into a dedicated network segment. Restrict network connectivity to only essential internal systems and services that require communication with the ANMS Agent Service.
2. Firewall Rules: Implement strict ingress and egress firewall rules. Block all inbound connections to the ANMS Agent Service port (default TCP 12345, verify actual port in your environment) from untrusted networks (e.g., internet, guest networks). Allow connections only from trusted ANMS management consoles or designated internal systems.
3. Host-Based Firewall: Configure host-based firewalls on affected systems to restrict access to the ANMS Agent Service port to only specific, authorized IP addresses or subnets.
4. Disable Service (If Not Critical): If the ANMS Agent Service functionality is not critical for business operations or if a temporary alternative exists, disable the service entirely until patching can be performed. Ensure this does not impact other critical systems.
5. Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) Rules: Deploy or update IPS signatures to detect and block known exploit attempts targeting CVE-2026-97381. Monitor IPS alerts closely.
6. Principle of Least Privilege: Ensure the ANMS Agent Service runs with the absolute minimum necessary privileges. Review the service account permissions and reduce them if they grant excessive access (e.g., SYSTEM/root privileges if not strictly required).
4. DETECTION METHODS
Proactive detection is crucial for identifying exploitation attempts or successful compromise related to CVE-2026-97381.
1. Log Analysis:
* Monitor ANMS Agent Service logs for unusual activity, errors, or unauthorized configuration changes.
* Review system event logs (e.g., Windows Event Logs, Linux syslog/audit logs) for suspicious process creations originating from the ANMS Agent Service process, unusual network connections, or privilege escalation attempts.
* Look for failed authentication attempts to the ANMS Agent Service before successful exploitation.
2. Network Monitoring:
* Monitor network traffic to and from the ANMS Agent Service port (e.g
