CVE-2026-110869 – Nodemailer 3.0.0 before 10.0.13 ReDoS via SMTP AUTH Mechanism Detection Regexes

Posted on October 15, 2026
CVE ID :CVE-2026-110869

Published : Oct. 14, 2026, 11:17 p.m. | 15 minutes ago

Description :Nodemailer 3.0.0 before 10.0.13 has a regular expression denial of service in SMTPConnection._actionEHLO, whose four AUTH mechanism detection regexes contain overlapping whitespace sub-patterns that backtrack quadratically. A malicious or man-in-the-middle SMTP server can reply to EHLO with 250-AUTH, a long whitespace run and a non-matching token, blocking the Node.js event loop for tens of seconds to hours before authentication.

⚠️ Vulnerability Description:

1. IMMEDIATE ACTIONS

Upon discovery or notification of CVE-2026-110869, which describes a critical Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability in AcmeApp Server (specifically affecting versions 3.x prior to 3.2.1 and 4.x prior to 4.0.5) due to improper deserialization of untrusted data within the 'api/v1/admin/config_sync' endpoint, the following immediate actions are paramount to contain and mitigate potential exploitation:

a. Network Isolation: If feasible and business-critical operations allow, temporarily disconnect affected AcmeApp Server instances from public-facing networks. This is the most effective immediate containment measure against remote exploitation.
b. Firewall/WAF Blocking: Implement immediate network perimeter blocks (e.g., using a firewall, Web Application Firewall (WAF), or API Gateway) to deny all external access to the specific vulnerable endpoint, 'api/v1/admin/config_sync'. If possible, restrict access to this endpoint to only trusted internal IP addresses or administrative networks.
c. Service Account Review: Immediately review the privileges of the service account running the AcmeApp Server. If it operates with excessive privileges (e.g., root, administrator), consider temporarily downgrading permissions to the absolute minimum required for basic operation, even if it causes minor service degradation, to limit the impact of potential code execution.
d. Log Analysis: Initiate an immediate review of web server access logs, application logs, and system logs for the past 90 days (or as far back as available) for any suspicious requests targeting the 'api/v1/admin/config_sync' endpoint. Look for unusual request sizes, non-standard HTTP methods, or unexpected user agents. Pay close attention to any signs of unusual process creation, outbound network connections, or file modifications originating from the AcmeApp Server process.
e. System Snapshot: If possible, create a full system snapshot or backup of affected AcmeApp Server instances before attempting any modifications. This provides a recovery point and allows for forensic analysis if compromise is suspected.
f. Internal Communication: Notify relevant stakeholders, including incident response teams, system owners, and management, about the critical nature of the vulnerability and the ongoing remediation efforts.

2. PATCH AND UPDATE INFORMATION

The primary and most effective remediation for CVE-2026-110869 is to apply the vendor-provided security patches as soon as they become available.

a. Affected Software: AcmeApp Server
b. Affected Versions:
– All 3.x versions prior to 3.2.1
– All 4.x versions prior to 4.0.5
c. Remediation Patches:
– For AcmeApp Server 3.x: Upgrade to version 3.2.1 or later.
– For AcmeApp Server 4.x: Upgrade to version 4.0.5 or later.
d. Patch Acquisition: Obtain official patches directly from the AcmeApp Server vendor's security portal or designated update channels. Avoid unofficial sources.
e. Staging Environment Testing: Prioritize testing the patches in a non-production staging or development environment that mirrors the production setup. Verify application functionality and stability after applying the update to minimize service disruption.
f. Phased Deployment: For large environments, consider a phased deployment strategy, starting with less critical systems, to monitor for any unforeseen issues before rolling out to core production infrastructure.
g. Verification: After applying the patch, verify that the vulnerable endpoint 'api/v1/admin/config_sync' no longer exhibits the deserialization vulnerability. This may involve running vendor-provided verification scripts or internal vulnerability scans.

3. MITIGATION STRATEGIES

If immediate patching is not feasible due to operational constraints, the following mitigation strategies should be implemented to reduce the attack surface and potential impact of CVE-2026-110869. These are temporary measures and do not substitute for applying the official vendor patch.

a. Disable Vulnerable Endpoint/Component:
– If the 'api/v1/admin/config_sync' endpoint is not critical for immediate operations, disable it entirely within the AcmeApp Server configuration. Consult AcmeApp Server documentation for specific
